Have you talked to a child about how you care for those outside your family? Your volunteer efforts? Who other than your family deserves a hand? When you explain why you care for others, children build the protective factor of compassion and tolerance.
The April Asset of the Month is #26 Caring. Each month La Plata County focuses on building one of the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets.
Developmental Asset of the Month
Asset #26 Caring | Young person places high value on helping other people.
Local Data: 59% of La Plata County youth report high value in helping others. (Assets Survey 2015)
Essential Question: In what ways do I model helping those outside my own family?
Tips for increasing the value of helping others:
- Read to your children about individuals and organizations that work to promote positive change in our country and around the world. Let your child choose a cause they care about and donate as a family.
- Investigate service opportunities where you and your child can volunteer together. Teens can choose a cause they believe in and become an ongoing volunteer on their own.
- Affirm your child when they act in caring and responsible ways to reinforce your service values.
