Coalition Collaboration Award

The Coalition was pleased to present two powerful partnerships in La Plata County with the Collaboration Award.  ELHI, Ignacio’s community center, and Thrasher Thursdays, a youth skateboard competition series, were the first to receive the Collaboration Award.  The award is given to those engaging at least three sectors to accomplish a project/event/initiative/policy that goes outside their immediate organization and builds assets in a new and needed way.

The first Collaboration Award was presented to Kasey Correia at CHC’s July 21st celebration.  ELHI is Ignacio's new community center with a lofty vision reflected in its name: Education,  Literacy, Health and Inspiration. The center is opening soon (October 30th ribbon cutting) as a result of Ray Dunton, chair, Kasey Correia and many other community members' vision and action over the last year. So far  the following will be a part of ELHI: La Plata County Youth Independent Performing Arts, Dancing Spirit Community Art Center, SUCAP Youth Services, SUCAP Curiosity After-School program, Ignacio Community Church and two  home schooling programs: Silver Spruce Academy and Hope Christian Academy. Other groups are welcome to rent rooms. All of this at old Ignacio Elementary School, 115 Ute St, Ignacio, CO 81137.

The second CHC Collaboration Award was presented to Karen Rowan on September 15th recognizing the extraordinary coordinating efforts of an evening skate competition series during the summer called Thrasher Thursdays.  Over 200 youth participants and numerous adult/family spectators attended the six competitions celebrating local skate talent. The long list of sponsors included 29 businesses, non-profits and government entities.

Thrasher Thursday is just one part of the bigger cause called State of the Skate, a group of parents and community members working to promote healthy norms at the skate park.  Pete Sakadinsky also with State of the Skate shared that in the last 30 years the park evolved from a wooden ramp to a $2.5 million facility that is publicly insured. It was Cathy Metz's first major project as director of Parks and Recreation to support children perceived to be at risk. Now we see all ages and the sport is progressing in a healthy environment.
