Every month schools, organizations & families across La Plata County embrace one of the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets & work to strengthen that asset in the youth they serve. Developmental Assets are the relationships, skills & experiences young people need to become thriving adults. Everyone, young & old, can build assets!
The September Asset of the Month is #19 Religious Community.
Asset #19 Religious Community—Young person spends one or more hours per week in activities in a religious institution.
Essential Question: Do I encourage my children to talk about their interpretation of spiritual or religious concepts, asking questions to clarify their comments
Local Data: 43% of La Plata County youth participate in faith-based activities as described in Asset #19. (Assets Survey 2015)
Tips for increasing participation in faith-based activities:
• Adapt your religious or spiritual practice to match your child’s developmental abilities.
• Together, read stories and enjoy music and other creative arts that have religious or spiritual themes.
• Exposure to different cultures and beliefs can help young people evaluate and define their own beliefs.
